Secular Order Discalced Carmelites
"May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be." St. Theresa of Avila
The Call to Carmel
Under the auspices of Washington Province, members of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites are faithful members of the Church "called to live in allegiance to Jesus Christ through a friendship with the one who knows and loves us" and in service to the Church under the protection of our Lady of Mt. Carmel, in the biblical tradition of the prophet Elijah, and inspired by the teachings of St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross, they seek to deepen their Christian commitment lived in Baptism.
Daily Life
Carmel is a way of life that fosters an ever-increasing awareness of being united with God in the depths of our being, while leading ordinary lives in the world. The Holy Family at Nazareth is the perfect model. Carmel is a way of spirituality that is possible for people in every walk of life.
We are lay Catholics, from diverse backgrounds, living in the secular world, committed to a life of service through prayer and apostolic acts of love. We have a deep desire to know God so that God will be known. We are members of the Discalced Carmelite Order, because we belong to a province that received us, to which, in turn, we've made (or are preparing to make) a lifetime commitment.
